  774.     We have divided the work into sections for analytical
  775.  purposes, and in order to aid in the work of indexing and giving
  776.  cross references. We have arranged the sections in what we
  777.  believe to be the best chronological order, but have not
  778.  attempted to justify our chronology, because space would not
  779.  permit. We have also given the time and place of each section,
  780.  where these things could be ascertained with any degree of
  781.  accuracy. In this matter, however, we are liable to disappoint
  782.  many of our readers, because we have been conservative. The
  783.  dates and places given in similar works are too often more
  784.  arbitrary assumptions: there being so little ground of reason
  785.  back of them that they do not even justify one in calling them
  786.  speculative. Unless we have had some reason for fixing a date or
  787.  assigning a locality, we have refrained from doing either,
  788.  though we have found them freely and positively asserted in such
  789.  places in similar works.

  793.     In preparing this work there has been no sparing of time,
  794.  labor, or expense. While we have carefully avoided all conceits,
  795.  quibblings, and useless refinements, and have studied to present
  796.  only that which was useful, helpful, and practical, we have
  797.  endeavored to put into the work the results of careful
  798.  investigation and studious research. Besides theological
  799.  treatises and works of reference, a full line of commentaries
  800.  has been used. In some few cases, where the sections have been
  801.  simple, from thirty to fifty commentaries have been consulted;
  802.  but in the vast majority of sections between eighty and one
  803.  hundred commentaries have been searched and sifted. To these
  804.  painstaking labors of the junior editor, there has been added
  805.  the results of the wider researches of the senior editor,
  806.  effected during a half century of continuous Bible study and
  807.  teaching. We have not aimed to produce a commentary for the
  808.  textual critic, the theologian, or the professor; but a plain
  809.  and simple work for all reader's of God's word.

  811.  AN OBJECT IN VIEW.

  813.     Moreover, having in view the preparation of a new series of
  814.  Sunday-school lessons, we have prepared this work as a basis of
  815.  such series. As the present International Series handles mere
  816.  scraps of the Bible, it is practicable to print the text in
  817.  quarterlies; but with a series which deals with the whole Bible,
  818.  larger portions must be assigned for the lessons, and such
  819.  printing of the text in the quarterlies becomes impossible. In
  820.  such a series the pupil must be referred to the Bible itself,
  821.  and in order that he may have a Bible with comments, we have
  822.  prepared the present work, intending to follow it with similar
  823.  volumes until the entire Bible is given to the public in this
  824.  annotated form, if God permit.

  832.     From this text, I have extracted the commentary which appears
  833.  after the combined Scripture passages. When material is common
  834.  to more than one Gospel, I have preferred the order of Mark,
  835.  Matthew, Luke, and John; thus, the main entry appears in Mark's
  836.  record, with additional notes and cross-references being added
  837.  to the other three Gospels as appropriate.

  839.     In entering the commentary by McGarvey and Pendleton, I have
  840.  attempted to preserve the text as accurately as possible, with
  841.  only minor changes in spelling and punctuation. The cross-
  842.  references in the text have been diligently checked and
  843.  corrected as necessary. Chapter numbers in the text are in lower
  844.  case roman letters; these I have changed to the On-Line Bible
  845.  format to make them readily accessible to the user. In
  846.  discussions of Greek words, I have inserted the transliterated
  847.  words within brackets.
